Singing and traveling the world!

Friday was a busy day at Emerald Hill, with much more to come this week as well!  Second Grade students traveled around the world during their "Continent Day" activities in the morning.  Each classroom was a different country for students to explore.  They were treated to a lesson and activity in each room.

When the students got to Asia, Mrs. Rathbone showed them Asia on the map, then focused on the Orient.  They talked about their art form called "origami."  They listened to Mrs. Rathbone tell them the story of The Paper Crane by Molly Bang.  Then instead of making an origami paper crane, we made a twirly bird.  The students then had a chance to make the bird fly and see what magic it could do.  (It did loop-d-loops!)

Mrs. Atherton had students traveling to Europe where the students learned about a specific castle called "Neuschwanstein" which is the castle that Walt Disney got his inspiration for the Cinderella castle.  Mrs. Atherton explained that most artists were from Europe, so they got to recreate their own Neuschwanstein castle while listening to Tchaikovsky, a famous European composer.
In Mrs. Sergek's room, Antarctica, students talked about what it's like in Antarctica and what you'd see- mostly ice and penguins!  To demonstrate how blubber keeps penguins warm, students put one hand in ice-cold water.  Then, they wore a 'blubber' glove and put that hand in the water to see the difference.  They were really surprised how much warmer just a thin layer of blubber kept them.  While waiting for their turn for the experiment, the other students created an Antarctic landscape by painting with ice!

South America was the focus of Mrs. Say's classroom.  She read them the story, "The Great Kapok Tree"
and looked at different animals that lived in the different levels are the rainforest.

In Miss Hallock's classroom, students were treated to a trip to the continent of Australia. Since Miss Hallci has travelled there herself, it was close to her heart. She had authentic pictures displayed children could see including the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, the Outback, kangaroos and koalas.
The activity that the children did was dot art. In Australia, you see art that is made from dots. Children saw boomerangs with dot art painting. Also, they have people called the Aborigines, similar to Native Americans, that paint their bodies with dot art. Each student was given an animal found in Australia and their job was to paint it using dots of different colored paint.
The 1st Grade Concert was the highlight of the afternoon.  All of the first grade classrooms participated by singing a variety of songs such as, "Jingle Bells," Frosty the Snowman," Celebrate Kwanza," "Spin the Dreidel" and "Silent Night."  Some students were also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play the bells and triangles.  Along with singing, the students also performed a variety of signs as well.  Thanks to Judy Dishman and Cathy terWeele for all of their time and effort preparing the students for this festive event!

5th Grade Salt Dough Map Project

5th Graders have been learning about the 8 geographic regions of North America.  Their latest assignment is to form their own 3-D map to represent what it should look like.  They traced and outlined their regions and are currently in the process of molding the salt dough for the formations.  There is the flat Coastal Plain, the rounded Appalachian Mountains, the flat rolling hills of the Interior Lowlands, the Canadian Shield that wraps around the Hudson Bay, the flat Great Plains, the tall, rugged Rocky Mountains, fertile valleys with mountain ranges next to the Pacific Ocean of the Coastal Range and the "cereal bowl" dips of the Basin and Range.  They also had to include the surrounding bodies of water.

Students hardly noticed when I entered the rooms to take pictures, they were so absorbed in their work!  Mrs. Sheads heard the following from her students:

"Whahoooo!"
"Stickey, ew, gross!"
"Squishy - but fun."
"It's easier to learn how the land formations are formed."

Thanksgiving Festivities

It has been such an exciting, fun-filled two days at Emerald Hill!  We started out on Monday with our Master Storyteller, Linda Hartman, from McGaheysville, VA.  She had some wonderful stories to share with all of the students about kindness and treating people with respect.  Tuesday, the Kindergarten students had their Thanksgiving Feast.  Students sang songs and made crafts.  The second grade students also had fun celebrating at their Pow-Wow as well.

Enjoy spending time at home with family and friends!  We'll see everyone back at school on Monday.

Updates

The trout are growing!  The latest news and pictures that I have show that the trout are now 1 and 3/4 inches long.  The plan is for them to be released near Earth Day in April.

We've had some exciting things happen this week and more planned for next week.  This week, all 4th grade students got the opportunity to tour Jamestown.  Next Monday, we have a Story Teller coming to deliver a message about treating people respectfully.  We also have the Kindergarten Feast and the 2nd Grade Pow Wow on Tuesday.  There is no school for students or staff Wednesday through Friday.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Veteran's Day Assembly

Emerald Hill students were very fortunate today to spend time with some members of our military.  We were delighted to have from the Navy, HM2 Carlos Calzada, HM3 James Spieker and HM3 Nick Latham attend a ceremony and answer questions from the students.  Last February, Emerald Hill students and staff collected items for care packages and made cards for members of the military.  These gentlemen were some of the troops who received these.  The color guard from Eastern View High Schol ROTC presented the flag and the chorus and tone chimes provided patriotic music to the ceremony.  I would like to thank MSgt Lisa Rodier, U.S. Air Force and Emerald Hill parent, for coordinating this wonderful opportunity!  We are very fortunate to be able to show our appreciation to those who honor our country every day.    THANK YOU!

First Grade "Bat Day"

Last week I got to spend some time in first grade during their "Bat Day" activities.

The first grade teachers wanted to do a fun fall activity for the students that was integrated with the Standards of Learning.  The teachers decided to have Bat Day as a way of integrating their science SOLs into language arts and math.  Students will be studying the life needs, physical characteristics, and habitats of bats.  They will also be reading the story "Stellaluna" and completing comprehension activities.  Teachers will be doing "bat subtraction" activities during math, with some classes using "bat food" (candy corn) as counters.  First graders will begin studying hibernation in November, so bats were the perfect animal to study.  (Thanks to Mrs. Krzyzek for the information!)

MEGA PARTY FUN!

Today, students got to participate in the "Mega Party" at Emerald Hill.  The PTO coordinated this event in conjunction with the fall fundraising campaign.  All students got to attend this outdoor event that consisted of an obstacle course, slide and sports center where students could throw a football, hit a baseball or kick a soccer ball.  The weather cooperated and students really enjoyed the time that they could spend outside going through all of the activities set up for them.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who graciously gave up their time to help with this event.  The resource teachers at Emerald Hill also deserve a big thank you for spending their day outside facilitating students through the schedule as well.  Overall, if you ask the students, the Mega Party was Mega Fun!
