How Many Band-aids?

Band-Aids by Shel Silverstain

I have a Band-Aid on my finger,
One on my knee, and one on my nose,
One on my heel,
and two on my shoulder,
Three on my elbow
and nine on my toes.
Two on my wrist, and one on my ankle,
One on my chin, and one on my thigh,
Four on my belly, and five on my back,
One on my forehead, and one on my eye.
One on my neck, and in case I might need'em
I have a box full of thirty-five more.
But oh!  I don't think it's sort of a pity
I don't have a cut or a sore!

I had such a good time working with Ms. Breeden's 1st grade math class this week.  Students used cubes to count how many band-aids were put on me as Ms. Breeden read them the poem listed above.  They had to add cubes to a tower and put them into groups of ten as we went along.  The colored band-aids went well with my outfit!  *Pictures coming soon.

Some other fun things this week were getting to see students enjoying some Valentine's Day celebrations and expressing their inner hippie on SCA spirit day!

Special Projects

Today has been a busy day here at Emerald Hill.  I got to attend a special news report from Beijing, China live from Mrs. Say's 2nd Grade classroom.  Then I got to taste some delicious foods at the 3rd Grade Chinese Feast.  It was delicious!

Students in Mrs. Say's classroom all participated in a live telecast reporting on a variety of historical facts that they had learned about China during their social studies time these past few weeks.  I enjoyed hearing about the Great Wall of China, Chinese New Year celebrations, panda bears, and calligraphy.  The students had also created drawings of the Great Wall that were displayed on the wall.  It was wonderful to hear the students' reports and to see how many parents came out to hear the the telecast as well.

Later in the afternoon, I traveled to 3rd grade to check out their Chinese Feast.  3rd Grade students read the story, "Sam and the Lucky Money."  They also got to learn about the Chinese calendar and money, make Chinese Lanterns and compose Haiku poetry.  There was a huge buffet of Chinese food for students to sample and enjoy.  As always, it was so nice to see so many parent volunteers helping students with their food.  The Beef & Broccoli was excellent!

I also wanted to showcase the fabulous work of some 4th Grade students.  Mrs. Davis, Mr. Luke and Mrs. Bell all have created Colonial Bottle People Museums.  Students were asked to research a famous historical person and represent him or has as a "bottle person."  Students also
gave an oral presentation before putting their person into the museum.  These museums are now being featured in classrooms as well as the library for all students to enjoy.  Great job!
