First Grade "Bat Day"

Last week I got to spend some time in first grade during their "Bat Day" activities.

The first grade teachers wanted to do a fun fall activity for the students that was integrated with the Standards of Learning.  The teachers decided to have Bat Day as a way of integrating their science SOLs into language arts and math.  Students will be studying the life needs, physical characteristics, and habitats of bats.  They will also be reading the story "Stellaluna" and completing comprehension activities.  Teachers will be doing "bat subtraction" activities during math, with some classes using "bat food" (candy corn) as counters.  First graders will begin studying hibernation in November, so bats were the perfect animal to study.  (Thanks to Mrs. Krzyzek for the information!)
